Sign UpSELFIE: Making It About Me / A Minnie Riperton Cabaret Revue
SELFIE is a cabaret revue of eclectic ’70s chanteuse, Minnie Riperton’s, music (“Lovin’ You,” “Memory Lane”) that spans the genres of soul, funk, folk and rock. Second, it’s a celebration of the ego of singer/songwriter, Aisha Kasmir, and her fight to play any part she wants and be seen in a white-washed world. SELFIE takes you on a lighthearted, humorous and uplifting trip through reclaiming herself – self-discovery, self-doubt, self-destruction, self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-actualization.
After fighting sexism, racism, misogyny, and exoticism while studying music and political science in college, Aisha was worn the fuck out. She lost her voice and her way. But then she discovered Minnie Riperton – a fellow former-Opera singer whose eclectic music touched every genre Aisha loved plus more she could discover. By using Minnie’s voice as a template, Aisha slowly gained back her confidence to sing again.
Adding her own synthy, deep house, electronic sensibilities, Aisha brings even more sonic diversity to Minnie’s music, and shares it with you. This year marks 40 years since Minnie’s passing, and this show hopes to give more time to the music of a visionary.
Aisha Kasmir
Classically trained and funk-tionally evolved, this is Aisha Kasmir’s cabaret debut. She has a few credits in community theater and university opera, but producing her own shows and music is what brought Ms. Kasmir to produce SELFIE: Making It About Me. She is a multi-disciplinary artist whose main focus is on singing and songwriting, and writing poetry and prose. She dabbles in dance (jazz, hip hop, salsa), film, and costume design. Ms. Kasmir is based in Las Vegas.
